You can apply for a boating licence for the Upper Sûre Lake, subject to certain conditions.

Boating on Upper Sûre Lake is governed by the Grand Ducal regulation of 16 April 2021 defining the protection zones around the Upper Sûre Lake.

Boats on the lake must be operated in accordance with the conditions set out in this regulation in terms of:

  • accessible areas and anchorages;
  • authorised types of boats and watercraft. Motorboats are prohibited, with some exceptions.

You can apply for a boating licence for the lake from the ministry responsible for water management.

Who is concerned

Any resident or non-resident wishing to:

  • launch; and
  • store a boat or watercraft at a landing stage, outside a building within a 100-metre strip of land from the shore of Upper Sûre Lake

How to proceed

Filing an application

You can apply for a boating licence for Upper Sûre Lake from the Ministry of the Environment, Climate and Biodiversity:

The online procedure (see 'Online services and forms') can be completed with or without authentication using:

  • a LuxTrust product;
  • a Luxembourg electronic identity card (eID); or
  • an eIDAS-compliant means of identification from another European country;

Attachments

You must also enclose the following documents with your application:

  • a copy of the boat owner’s identity card;
  • a photo of the boat (not required for renewal applications);
  • a copy of the sales contract or purchase invoice for the boat (not required for renewal applications).

Receipt of the boating licence

Once the application is approved by the Ministry, you:

  • can view your licence online in PDF format in your private eSpace, provided you have submitted an online application using authentication;
  • will receive your licence as a PDF by email, if you submit your application online without authentication;
  • receive your licence by post if you do not have internet access.

The boating licence features a GouvCheck QR code. This QR code confirms the authenticity of the licence and all of the information contained in the document.

Renewal

You must apply to renew the licence you have been granted every 2 years.

Licence renewal applications can be submitted via the same online procedure as the initial licence application (see 'Online services and forms').

Refusal or withdrawal of the licence

The Minister may refuse or withdraw a boating licence for Upper Sûre Lake in the event of non-compliance with the regulatory conditions.

You will receive a notification of refusal:

  • via MyGuichet.lu, if you submitted your application via this channel;
  • by registered post, if you submitted your application by post.

An administrative appeal to reverse the minister's decision may be filed within 3 months of the notice.

Notification of change

You can submit any changes to your boating licence online via MyGuichet.lu.

This procedure can be carried out with or without authentication using:

  • a LuxTrust product;
  • a Luxembourg electronic identity card (eID); or
  • an eIDAS-compliant means of identification from another European country.
