Application for allocation of a national identification number in the National Registry of Natural Persons for professional purposes
Last update
Any non-Luxembourgish natural person who does not reside in Luxembourg can, if they do not already have one and subject to certain conditions, apply for a national identification number when registering with the National Registry of Natural Persons (RNPP).
The application must have professional reasons, i.e. the applicant needs to complete the following procedures for professional purposes:
- registration of a recreational craft flying the Luxembourg flag;
- transmission of payment information in the context of the fight against tax fraud.
- filing salary and pension account statements;
- application for, or modification of, a business permit;
- application for financial aid for SMEs or new businesses.
The purpose of the RNPP is to guarantee the accuracy of the data recorded, on the basis of supporting documents.
Who is concerned
Any natural person who:
- does not have the Luxembourg nationality;
- does not reside in Luxembourg; and
- does not have a Luxembourgish national identification number.
Note: only natural persons who require a national identification number for professional purposes are eligible for this procedure.
Please note that natural persons who hold an eIDAS certificate may apply for a national identification number by submitting their application for registration via eIDAS.
Prerequisites
In order to apply for a national identification number, you must have a valid identity document (identity card or passport).
To attach a copy of your identity document as a supporting document to the online application, please proceed as follows:
- first scan your identity document in PDF format; and
- then sign it electronically with your LuxTrust certificate, which must show the same identity as on the identity document provided.
If your LuxTrust certificate does not allow you to electronically sign a PDF, you can alternatively attach the details of your certificate. To do so, you must:
- go to the webpage 'Test my certificate' on the LuxTrust website;
- click on 'Test my certificate';
- follow the steps that correspond to your device;
- click on 'Print' to download the details of your certificate.
You must attach the downloaded document (entitled 'Certificate status') as a supporting document to the online application, in addition to the copy of your identity document.
You may also use a signature certificate other than a LuxTrust certificate, provided that it allows a qualified electronic signature.
The validity of your electronic signature is checked by the RNPP services.
Costs
The application for a national identification number is free of charge.
How to proceed
Filing an application
Applications must be submitted online via MyGuichet.lu. This is a procedure without authentication, i.e. it does not require a private or business eSpace on MyGuichet.lu.
In particular, you must provide the following information:
- your last name(s) and first name(s);
- your date and place of birth;
- your postal and email addresses;
- your nationality;
- your marital status;
- the reason(s) for your request for a national identification number.
You will receive an email notification:
- after having submitted your application;
- whenever there is a change in your application's status.
If you do not receive an email after having submitted your application, you should check that it is not in your email spam folder (junk email).
In the event of a technical problem, you can contact:
- the Guichet.lu Helpdesk for assistance on how to use MyGuichet.lu;
- LuxTrust for all questions regarding LuxTrust certificates.
Supporting documents
You must also enclose with your application:
- a copy of your valid identity document (identity card or passport), signed electronically using:
- your LuxTrust certificate; or
- another signature certificate, provided it allows a qualified electronic signature (see under 'Prerequisites');
- if you have a LuxTrust certificate that does not allow to electronically sign a PDF: the details of your certificate (see under 'Prerequisites');
- a residence certificate issued within the past 6 months;
- proof of the professional reasons given (e.g.: ministerial decree approving the maritime company, K-Bis/RCS extract, etc.).
Processing the application
During the processing of your application, you may be asked to provide additional supporting documents via MyGuichet.lu.
If your application is approved, the RNPP staff will update your details in the registry and you will be allocated a national identification number.
You will be informed by post: an extract of your details registered in the RNPP will be sent to you automatically within 2 weeks of your details being updated.
Note: the number is allocated to the natural person and not to a company.
