Do you go hunting or own a firearm? – What you need to know

Obtaining a firearms licence
Any resident wishing to possess a firearm must submit an application for a firearms licence to the Ministry of Justice.
The most common reasons are:
- hunting;
- sport shooting;
- collecting firearms; or
- inheritance of a firearm.
The licence will be issued to you if:
- the reason given is deemed valid; and
- there is no reason to suggest a danger to yourself, to others or to public order. To this end, you must attach to your application a medical certificate dated within the last 2 months, confirming that there are no contraindications.
Procedures
You must:
- submit your application via MyGuichet.lu (LuxTrust or eID authentication) or by post;
- provide the required supporting documents (detailed reason, criminal record extract, etc.).
The authorisation is valid for 5 years and must be renewed upon request before it expires.
Special cases
No authorisation can be issued to you before the age of 11.
If you are a minor (aged 16–17), a licence to carry sporting or hunting weapons may be issued under strict conditions, in particular:
- mandatory parental consent; and
- the mandatory presence of an adult who has held a licence for at least 2 years.
Obtaining an annual hunting licence
To hunt in Luxembourg, you must hold an annual hunting licence, valid from 1 April to 31 March. This licence is personal and mandatory for taking part in any hunt organised on Luxembourg territory.
Procedures
You must:
- present a Luxembourg hunting proficiency certificate (or an equivalent recognised foreign certificate);
- provide a certificate of hunting liability insurance covering the entire hunting season;
- attach an extract from the criminal record of your country of residence;
- pay the fees prescribed by law (proof of payment must be attached to the application).
For minors
From the age of 17, you may obtain a hunting licence provided you have:
- parental consent; and
- have passed the proficiency test.
You may only use a firearm for hunting in the presence of and under the supervision of an adult who has held a hunting licence for at least 2 years.
Transport and transfer of weapons: rules to follow
Entering Luxembourg with a firearm
If you are a resident of a Member State of the European Union, you must hold a European Firearms Pass (EFP) issued by the competent authorities of your country of residence.
This pass must be endorsed by the Arms and Security Service of the Ministry of Justice before entering Luxembourg.
If you are invited to go hunting and are a national of a non-European country, you must submit a specific application in advance to the Arms and Security Service of the Ministry of Justice before entering Luxembourg with a firearm.
Leaving Luxembourg with a firearm
To travel with a firearm within the EU, you must:
- hold a European Firearms Pass (EFP); and, where applicable,
- have an export authorisation if you are leaving the country permanently.
Safety and legal obligations
Storage of firearms
You are required to store your firearms and ammunition in secure conditions, in accordance with current regulations, to prevent theft, loss or unauthorised use.
Registering a new firearm
If you already hold a firearms licence, any acquisition of an additional weapon (through purchase, loan or donation) requires prior registration.
