Renewing your student residence permit
Last update
If you are a citizen from a third country and already have a Luxembourgish residence permit which you plan to renew, you must submit the renewal application to the General Department of Immigration:
- in due time; and
- at least 2 months before the expiry date of your current residence permit.
Who is concerned
Any national of a third country (i.e. a country that is neither a Member State of the European Union (EU) nor considered equivalent to an EU Member State) who:
- resides in Luxembourg with a valid residence permit for 'students'; and
- plans to renew their residence permit.
Deadlines
You must submit your application:
- in due time; and
- at least 2 months before the expiry date of your current residence permit.
How to proceed
Submitting the application
You can submit your application for renewal of your residence permit to the General Department of Immigration:
- online using MyGuichet.lu; or
- by post using a specific form (see 'Online services and forms').
Submitting the application online
The application for renewal of a residence permit is available on MyGuichet.lu. The online procedure can be completed:
- with authentication using:
- a LuxTrust product; or
- an electronic identity card (eID); or
- without authentication.
Submitting the application by post
If you want to send your application by post, you must send:
- the application form (see 'Online services and forms'); and
- the supporting documents listed below.
Supporting documents
You must submit a copy of the following documents with your application:
- a full copy of your valid passport (all pages);
- proof of enrolment in a higher education establishment;
- authorisation from your parent(s) if you are under 18 years old;
- proof that you have sufficient financial resources to cover your living costs while in Luxembourg, and the cost of a return trip home. The following may be used as proof:
- the original copy of a student grant certificate or a student loan certificate stating the amount and its duration;
- an original bank certificate and a bank statement for the past 6 months:
- proving the requisite financial resources in your name; or
- if your parents are providing for you: proof that your parents have sufficient financial resources, that they are solvent and capable of covering your living costs, including tuition and healthcare costs, for at least a year (12 months) and the cost of your travel home;
- the original copy of a financial statement of support in relation to you and to the Luxembourg government:
- signed by a guarantor who holds Luxembourg nationality or who legally resides in Luxembourg;
- for the living expenses, including tuition costs and healthcare expenses, for at least one academic year, plus the cost of a return trip home;
- in the legally required format (see under 'Online services and forms').
Any material benefits that you enjoy (such as free accommodation), and any income from employment (limited to 15 hours per week), are also taken into account;
- a recent extract from your Luxembourg criminal record (record no. 3).
If the documents are not drawn up in English, French or German, an official translation by a certified translator must be attached.
Approval of the application
If your application is approved, you will receive a letter inviting you to:
- pay the EUR 80 issuance fee for the residence permit; and
- make an appointment with the General Department of Immigration in order to have your photograph and fingerprints taken, which will then be embedded into the residence permit.
You can also bring a recent photo that complies with ICAO standards ('biometric passport standard').
You must provide proof of payment of the fee on the day of your appointment to have your biometric data recorded, otherwise your appointment will be cancelled.
Issuance of the residence permit
One week after the recording of your biometric data, you can collect your residence permit at the General Department of Immigration.
Professional activities after the completion of studies
If you have successfully completed the final year of your studies in Luxembourg, earning a higher education diploma awarded at the end of a university course that is at least 5 years long, a simplified procedure exists to apply for a residence permit that allows you to work as:
- a salaried worker; or
- a self-employed worker.
In that case, you have to file an application with the General Department of Immigration for a residence permit for salaried or self-employed workers, before your 'student' residence permit expires.
You also need to enclose the following documents with your application:
- a full copy of your valid passport (all pages);
- a recent extract from your Luxembourg criminal record;
- a copy of your final higher education diploma, certifying that you have successfully completed a university cycle in Luxembourg;
- proof that your intended professional activity directly relates to your academic training;
- for salaried work:
- the certificate from the ADEM giving your employer the right to hire whomever they see fit;
- a copy of your signed and dated employment contract, complying with Luxembourg labour law;
- for self-employed work:
- a business plan and financing plan;
- proof that you have the necessary economic resources to undertake a business project or take over an existing business;
- if you are taking over an existing business, the balance sheets and profit and loss accounts for the past 3 financial years;
- in case of an activity subject to a business permit, the agreement in principle;
- in case of an activity subject to other authorisations, accreditations or registrations, the agreement in principle from the competent authority.
