Stay alert and take the right precautions during the heatwave

Last update

The Ministry of Health and Social Security would like to remind you of some recommendations to keep you safe.

Adopt the right habits:

  • stay hydrated by drinking water regularly in small amounts without waiting until you feel thirsty (at least 1.5 litres of water per day);
  • avoid leaving the house during the hottest hours of the day;
  • close your windows, shutters or curtains during the day and air your home at night and in the morning before 9.00 to keep it cool;
  • opt for light meals rich in water (fruit, vegetables, etc.);
  • wear light, loose-fitting, light-coloured clothing;
  • stay in a cool or air-conditioned place if possible;
  • avoid strenuous exercise and sports activities during the hottest hours of the day;
  • show solidarity with elderly or vulnerable people in your community. Visit them, help them stay hydrated, or check in on them regularly.

During a heatwave, keep an eye on the health of:

  • infants;
  • elderly people;
  • individuals with chronic illnesses (heart disease, kidney disease, etc.).

They are particularly at risk and must be supported in adopting the right habits.

You may also be exposed to high temperatures in the context of your work. The recommendations of the Inspectorate of Labour and Mines are available at this link: https://itm.public.lu/fr/actualites/communiques/2020/08/chaleur-canicule.html.

If you have a heatstroke (high fever, headache, nausea, confusion, etc.), contact a healthcare professional or call 112 in case of emergency.

For specific questions about health problems caused by high temperatures:

  • contact the Health Directorate – Health Inspection Department on (+352) 247 85 653; or
  • visit www.sante.lu/canicule.

Please note that each year a National Heatwave Plan is put in place for people aged 75 and over:

  • who live alone or with a disabled person;
  • with limited independence;
  • who live without outside help;
  • who are not covered by long-term care insurance.

For more details on how to register for the Heatwave Plan, see our explanatory information page.
