Finding a job if you have a recognised disability

Last update

Disabled employee status

To obtain disabled employee status, you must submit an application to the Medical Commission of the Disability and Redeployment Department (Service handicap et reclassement professionnel) of the National Employment Agency (ADEM). This commission assesses your ability to work based on your state of health. If you are granted this status, you will have access to support measures to facilitate your professional integration.

Benefit from integration and vocational training measures

Once the disabled employee status has been granted, ADEM's Disability and Redeployment Department offers a range of services to facilitate the professional integration of disabled employees and support their employers.

In order to ensure that your workspace is accessible and adapted to your professional abilities, workspace accommodations can be made to suit your specific needs, such as:

  • installation of specialised equipment;
  • adaptation of working times;
  • ergonomic adaptation of your working environment.

Applying for reserved positions in the public sector

Certain job offers in the civil service are reserved for employees recognised as disabled. ADEM's Disability and Redeployment Department can, under certain conditions, refer you to these positions. The state, communes and public sector establishments are required to reserve a certain number of positions for disabled employees.

Employment in a sheltered workshop

If your state of health does not permit you to work in the ordinary labour market, sheltered workshops are an alternative. These work environments are adapted with specific supervision. ADEM's Occupational Counselling and Redeployment Panel examines each case to determine whether or not employment in a sheltered workshop is appropriate.

Good to know

The income for disabled workers (revenu pour salariés handicapés - RSH) is aimed at adults with a disability. You must have residual abilities that allow you to work, but are unable to find a suitable job for reasons beyond your control. This income is subject to specific legal conditions.
