Change of residence permit category
Last update
Summary:
If you are a citizen from a third country who already has a Luxembourgish residence permit and you wish to change the category of your residence permit, you must submit the application for a change in good time.
If you are a third-country national and already have a Luxembourgish residence permit for which you plan to change the category, you must submit the application for a change of residence permit category to the General Department of Immigration in good time and at the latest 2 months before your current residence permit expires.
Who is concerned
Each national of a third country (i.e. a country that is neither a Member State of the European Union (EU) nor considered equivalent to an EU Member State) and who:
- resides in Luxembourg with a valid residence permit; and
- wishes to change the category of their residence permit because their personal situation has changed.
Deadlines
You must submit your application:
- in due time; and
- at least 2 months before the expiry date of your current residence permit.
How to proceed
Filing an application
You must send your application by post to the General Department of Immigration using the required application form.
Supporting documents
You must enclose with your application the supporting documents required for the new category of residence permit you are applying for.
The list of required documents can be found in this section by searching in the relevant category.
In fact, the supporting documents to be submitted are the same as those required for applications for long-stay visas with a view to obtaining a residence permit.
If the documents are not drawn up in English, French or German, an official translation by a certified translator must be attached.
Please note: holders of a residence permit as a seasonal worker, student, trainee, volunteer, au pair or for medical treatment are not permitted to change their category.
Approval of the application
If your application is approved, you will receive a letter inviting you to:
- pay the EUR 80 issuance fee for the residence permit; and
- make an appointment with the General Department of Immigration in order to have your photograph and fingerprints taken, which will then be embedded into the residence permit.
You can also bring a recent photo that complies with ICAO standards ('biometric passport standard').
You must provide proof of payment of the fee on the day of your appointment to have your biometric data recorded, otherwise your appointment will be cancelled.
Issuance of the residence permit
One week after the recording of your biometric data, you can collect your residence permit at the General Department of Immigration.
