New features of the identity card

Last update

The list of biometric data contained in Luxembourg identity cards is being extended. From now on, the electronic chip of requested cards must contain:

  • an image of the holder's face;
  • the holder's scanned signature;
  • 2 of the holder's scanned fingerprints, if the holder is 12 years of age or above.

In addition, the holder's usual place of residence is no longer part of the information contained in the identity card. Thus, it will no longer be necessary to apply for a new identity card when moving: an administrative simplification that will benefit both citizens and communal administrations.

As a reminder: the Luxembourg identity card proves its holder's identity and nationality. The card is:

  • compulsory for Luxembourg nationals who are 15 years of age or above and reside in Luxembourg;
  • optional for children of Luxembourg nationality who are under 15 years of age and reside in Luxembourg;
  • optional for Luxembourg nationals residing abroad.

Luxembourg nationals whether they are residing in Luxembourg or not can submit their application for a Luxembourgish identity card to the Guichet.lu reception desk.

Luxembourg nationals residing in Luxembourg may also apply to their communal administrations and those living abroad have the possibility to apply to a Luxembourg diplomatic or consular mission abroad (please note that honorary consulates are not competent in this matter).

Applicants must be registered in the National Registry of Natural Persons (RNPP).
