Summary:

If you are a third-country national and wish to settle in Luxembourg for a period of more than 90 days as a young au pair, you must follow a two-step procedure.

If you are a third-country national and wish to settle in Luxembourg for a period of more than 90 days and stay there as an au pair, you must follow a procedure consisting of 2 consecutive steps:

  • Step 1: before entering the country, you must:
    • apply for a long-stay visa (Visa D) with a view to being issued with a residence permit for 'au pairs' at the diplomatic or consular representation of Luxembourg in your country of origin, country of residence or a neighbouring country if Luxembourg is not represented for long-stay visa matters in your country of origin or country of residence (long-stay visas may only be issued by Luxembourg or Belgian embassies); and
    • hold a valid passport;
  • Step 2: after entering the country, you must:
    • make a declaration of arrival in the commune of residence in Luxembourg; and
    • undergo a medical check; and
    • apply for a residence permit before your long-stay visa expires.

The information below relates only to step 1.

You will find the procedures to follow during the second step, after entering Luxembourg, in this dedicated information page.

  • an extract from the criminal record of your current country of residence, dated within the last 3 months, or an affidavit if there is a justified reason why a criminal record extract cannot be obtained;
  • the ministerial approval as an au pair, established by the competent minister.
  • a valid residence permit issued by another EU Member State if the applicant is already resident in the Schengen Area;

In principle, the time limit for a response is a maximum of 60 days.

If the information or documents provided in support of the application are incomplete, the Minister will:

  • specify what further information is required; and
