Prepare for winter: remember to change your tyres

Last update

Driving a motor vehicle on public roads in Luxembourg in winter conditions (black ice, packed snow, slush, ice sheets or frost) is permitted only if your vehicle is equipped with authorised winter tyres or all-weather tyres:

  • marked 'M.S.', 'M+S' or 'M&S'; or
  • marked with the alpine symbol representing a 3-peak mountain with a snowflake.

The obligation to fit winter tyres is not linked to a fixed period, but depends on the weather and road conditions. You should therefore check the conditions before setting off. You must fit 4 identical tyres to your vehicle.

This obligation applies to all drivers, regardless of the country in which the vehicle is registered. In the event of non-compliance, a fine of EUR 74 will be levied.

For lorries, buses and coaches, only the wheels on all the driving axles of these vehicles need to be fitted with winter tyres. This also applies to motor homes with a maximum authorised mass of over 3,500 kilograms.

Some vehicles are exempt from these obligations:

  • vehicles parked on public roads;
  • mopeds, motorcycles, tricycles, lightweight quadricycles, tractors and self-propelled machinery as well as vehicles for which proper winter tyres do not exist.
