In Luxembourg, it is possible under certain conditions to modify:

• the indication of your gender and possibly your first name(s); or
• only your name and/or your first name(s).

These applications can be made, under certain conditions, by:

• adults; and
• minors accompanied by one or both parents exercising parental authority or their legal representative.

Application to change the indication of one's gender

You can apply to have the indication of your gender changed in your civil status records and, in conjunction with this application, you can also apply to change one or more first names, particularly if you:

• are a Luxembourg national; or
• have another nationality, but have had your habitual place of residence and regular stay in Luxembourg; or
• have refugee, subsidiary protection or stateless status.

Application to change the first name and/or surname

You can apply to the Ministry of Justice to change only your first and/or last name if you:

• have Luxembourg nationality and reside in Luxembourg or abroad; or
• are recognised as stateless; or
• have refugee or subsidiary protection status.
