The Luxembourg government invites residents and cross-border workers to participate voluntarily and free of charge in the COVID-19 serological test within the framework of Large Scale Testing. The test consists of screening for COVID-19 antibodies on drops of dried blood, known as the "DBS test" (Dry Blood Spot).
The DBS serological test:
The DBS serological test is not to be confused with the COVID-19 PCR test, which is done by throat swab.
The PCR test can tell whether or not the person is a carrier of the virus at the time of the screening. The DBS test can tell whether a person has been in contact with the coronavirus in the past, even without having had symptoms.
At present, scientific knowledge does not allow us to determine the period during which the antibodies protect against a new contamination. Therefore, a positive result of the serological test does not guarantee lasting and systematic immunity.
A positive serological test which identifies the presence of coronavirus antibodies in the blood, does not justify a relaxation of social distancing and barrier gestures.
Even with a positive test, the person is still likely to be re-infected with COVID-19 and thus spread the virus.
The usefulness of the serological test lies in the fact that it is a complementary tool for epidemiological surveillance. The test allows to develop better knowledge about:
The results of the serological tests will also allow to monitor the effectiveness of the vaccination programme as it progresses. Thus, participation in serological testing helps professionals to better understand the evolution of the epidemic in the country.
Serological testing by dried blood drop concerns any person who has a 13-digit Luxembourg identification number (matricule), whether they are:
