Declare your stay or residence abroad

Last update

If you are a Luxembourg national staying abroad on a temporary basis (long or short stay) or if you reside abroad, you can declare your stay abroad to the Ministry of Foreign and European Affairs, Defence, Development Cooperation and Foreign Trade (MAE).

This declaration is free of charge and is not compulsory.

However, declaring your stay or permanent residence abroad to the MAE may be useful on various levels:

  • standard consular services provided by diplomatic and consular missions will be easier to carry out (declaration of loss of document and issue of a new document);
  • in the event of a request for consular assistance, the Ministry and the diplomatic and consular representations can react more quickly;
  • in the event of an emergency or crisis in the country in which you are staying, the Ministry and the diplomatic and consular representation in that country will have your contact details, so that they can contact you more easily to give you the instructions you need to follow;
  • if necessary, the Ministry can also contact the contact person you have designated in Luxembourg to inform them of any problems.

The declaration of your stay or your residence abroad is carried out via an online assistant available on MyGuichet.lu, with or without authentication.
