The purpose of the National Registry of Natural Persons is to:
- guarantee the uniqueness and unambiguousness of the national identification number (matricule - 13-digit number) assigned to a natural person;
- gather all data relating to the identification of natural persons (resident or otherwise) in contact with a Luxembourg administration;
- keep a record of any updates to the personal data of a natural person;
- serve as the basis for the production of the following: travel documents, identity documents, residence permits, driving licences and other administrative documents;
Public services and government administrations with access to the registry do, in principle, no longer need to request the production of certificates which are to serve as proof of the accuracy of personal data.
