Student accommodation

Students enrolled at the University of Luxembourg may live in university halls of residence or in private homes.

The University of Luxembourg has over a thousand rooms reserved for students in 37 halls of residence.

These halls of residence offer students the best environment for living, working and participating in cultural exchanges, thereby optimising the quality of their stay in Luxembourg and facilitating their academic success.

Students seeking accommodation in a university hall of residence must apply online on the University of Luxembourg website.

University accommodation is allocated on the basis of the number of rooms available; students are not automatically allocated a place.

Who is concerned

Only students enrolled at the University of Luxembourg studying full time for a bachelor's degree, master's or PhD are eligible for such accommodation.

Students who wish to apply for university accommodation must be:

  • enrolled as regular students of the University of Luxembourg; or
  • enrolled at the University of Luxembourg as part of an exchange scheme (such as Erasmus), or as a 'free-mover' (a private project that is not part of the Erasmus scheme), for a one-semester placement.

  • for a furnished private room with a shared kitchen and bathroom: EUR 350;
  • for a furnished private room with a private bathroom and a shared kitchen: EUR 350;
  • for a furnished studio: EUR 500.

How to proceed

Applying for accommodation

Students enrolled at the University of Luxembourg seeking accommodation in a university hall of residence must complete an online application on the University of Luxembourg website.

Students may not choose their future hall of residence. They can, however, put forward a request when applying for student accommodation.

The Student Department (Service des études et la vie étudiante – SEVE) allocates accommodation on the basis of the application file (taking account of the course of study and the location of classes). Allocation of a room is not final until the student has paid the required bond.

Once they have paid the bond, the student will be sent a confirmation e-mail.

Furnishing of university accommodation units

The university accommodation units administered by SEVE Housing come with standard furnishing and fixtures.

Insurance

Student tenants must take out home insurance covering the following risks:

  • private and tenant's civil liability;
  • furnishing: for a minimum of EUR 5,000;
  • immovable property and contents: water damage, fire, explosion.

The University of Luxembourg offers multirisk home insurance, but students may also take out an insurance policy with any insurance company licensed to operate in Luxembourg.

Rental payments

The student must pay the rent corresponding to the type of room they are given.

Rent must be paid in advance by bank transfer or by bank card to the SEVE by the 5th of each month, if the lease was entered into on the 1st of the month, or by the 20th of the month if the lease was entered into on the 16th of the month.

Lease term

The Student Housing Unit (L’Unité Logements étudiants) offers leases for the following terms:

  • 5 months for the winter term;
  • 7 months for the summer term.

For PhD students, leases are for 6 months.

All terms and conditions of the stay are set forth in the lease agreement between the tenant and the University of Luxembourg.

The lease may be extended, provided:

  • all rental payments have been made;
  • the student has re-enrolled for the following academic term;
  • the student can show proof of home insurance;
  • the student has not violated the house rules applicable to halls of residence;
  • progress in their course of study is deemed sufficient.

The maximum length of stay may not exceed the duration of the student's course of study. If the termination date falls during an exam period, the lease may be extended upon the tenant’s written request.

Termination of the lease

The lease may be terminated in the following situations:

  • termination of the main lease by the owner of the accommodation;
  • non-payment of rent;
  • unacceptable behaviour by the tenant or by any person occupying the sublet premises;
  • subletting of the accommodation to a third party;
  • non-compliance with the house rules;
  • a change in the tenant’s academic status compared to the status they declared on entering into the lease.

The lease may only be terminated after a period of 2 months, and with one month’s notice. The notice period runs from the 1st or 16th day of the month following the date of receipt of the termination letter, depending on the date on which the lease was entered into.
